AI at the Counter : Practical Support for Store Clerks

A growing line of customers : A new employee at the register.

A customer who needs to be asked for identification. In a convenience store, small decisions come one after another, and some require just as much tact as vigilance.

How can technology support the people making these decisions? For Age Guardian, this is a central question: innovation must fit naturally into the daily operations of retail businesses and provide employees with the support they need, exactly when they need it.

A Trend Moving Closer to the Front Lines

In her article « AI on the Front Line », published in September 2026, journalist Lauren Shanesy explores several applications of artificial intelligence in convenience stores and other neighborhood retailers: answering operational questions, making training accessible on the job, and helping identify service-related issues.

The article also highlights the importance of listening to employees when introducing these tools. Technology is more likely to be successfully adopted when team members understand its value and have a voice in how it is implemented.

This perspective inspires a very practical question: at what point during a shift could an additional point of reference help a store clerk?

Age Verification: An Interaction That Deserves Support

Asking for identification is a routine part of selling age-restricted products. Yet initiating that conversation can be uncomfortable, especially for an employee who is new to the job or working alone.

Our interview preparation work focuses specifically on this reality: the personal nature of the request, the clerk’s hesitation, and the possibility of a tense interaction. These insights are guiding our approach toward a tool that helps initiate the conversation and provides the entire team with a consistent point of reference.

The goal is to make these interactions easier to navigate. Training establishes the procedure; a signal at the counter can serve as a timely reminder to put it into practice during a transaction.

Age Guardian: A Simple Signal, a Human Decision

Age Guardian estimates an apparent age range in real time. Its indicator light recommends checking identification when a person appears to be 25 years old or younger, based on the threshold presented on our website.

The store clerk retains full responsibility for the final decision and the sale. A green light does not constitute proof of age or authorization to sell. Age estimates may be imperfect, particularly depending on camera angle or lighting conditions. When in doubt, checking identification remains essential.

The device’s age threshold serves as a guideline for when to verify identification. It does not determine the legal purchasing age for a product.

Designed with Local Processing in Mind

Our device operates independently of the point-of-sale system, without an Internet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth connection. All analysis is performed locally, in real time, and no images or biometric data are stored. The device estimates apparent age without attempting to identify individuals.

Integrating the Tool into the Team’s Daily Routine

Whether for an independent retailer or a chain manager, installing a device is most effective when accompanied by a discussion with employees. Here are three key points to clarify together:

  • Understanding the signal. Every store clerk should understand what the indicator light recommends and the limitations of apparent age estimation.

  • How to approach customers. A simple phrase, such as “May I see your ID, please?” helps employees feel prepared for the interaction.

  • What to do when uncertain. Team members should know how to follow the store’s procedures and when to seek assistance from a supervisor.

After implementation, gathering feedback from store clerks helps assess how the tool fits into their daily work. Is the indicator light clearly visible? Are the procedures well understood? Which situations remain challenging? These observations provide a practical foundation for refining training and support.

Innovation That Supports the People Behind the Counter

The value of a tool is also measured by how well it fits into everyday operations. For Age Guardian, this means supporting a specific task: recognizing when an age verification may be necessary, while leaving the employee in control of the interaction.
