Age Guardian has reached an important milestone in its development with the announcement of a collaboration with the Independent Convenience Stores Alliance (ICSA), a national coalition representing independent convenience store retailers across Canada.

As part of this collaboration, ICSA members will participate in a pilot project to evaluate Age Guardian technology directly in independent convenience stores.

This initiative will provide an opportunity to test the solution in real-world retail environments and gather feedback from retailers and employees who will use it in their daily operations.

Technology Designed to Support Age Verification

Age Guardian was developed with a simple goal: to assist retailers and their employees in the age verification process when selling age-restricted products.

Thanks to artificial intelligence, the device analyzes a customer's facial features in real time to estimate their apparent age. When the system determines that additional verification is recommended, it alerts the cashier.

However, Age Guardian never makes decisions on behalf of employees.

The decision to request identification and whether to approve a transaction remains entirely the responsibility of the retailer and their staff.

The technology therefore serves as a decision-support tool, designed to encourage more consistent application of age verification practices.

A Pilot Project in Real-World Retail Environments

The collaboration with ICSA will allow Age Guardian to be evaluated in the day-to-day operations of convenience stores.

The pilot project will focus on gathering insights into:

  • How employees use the technology;

  • How it integrates into daily store operations;

  • Retailers' experiences with the solution;

  • Its contribution to the age verification process;

  • Potential improvements to the technology.

Feedback collected directly from participating retailers and employees will also help guide the continued development of Age Guardian and ensure the technology meets the practical needs of store owners and their teams.

A Broader Discussion on Modernizing Age Verification

ICSA has expressed its intention to share the results of this initiative with governments and various stakeholders as part of ongoing discussions about modernizing age verification practices in Canada.

For Age Guardian, this initiative represents an important opportunity to demonstrate how technology can complement the practices already implemented by responsible retailers.

Preventing the sale of age-restricted products to minors relies on several key elements: employee training, clear policies, consistent enforcement of rules, and proper identification checks when necessary.

Technology can serve as an additional tool to support these efforts.

A Growing National Alliance

This announcement also comes as the Regroupement des tabagies du Québec (RTQ) officially joins the Independent Convenience Stores Alliance.

RTQ joins several organizations representing independent retailers across Canada, including the Ontario Convenience Stores Association, the Ontario Korean Businessmen’s Association, and the United Korean Commerce & Industry Association of Canada..

RTQ's membership helps strengthen the representation of Quebec's independent retailers within this national coalition.

For Age Guardian, collaborating with an organization that brings together retailers from different regions across the country represents a significant step in the development of the solution.

An Important Milestone for Age Guardian

Age Guardianwas developed in Quebec to address a very real challenge that retailers face every day: consistently determining when an identification check should be performed.

Having this technology evaluated through a pilot project involving members of a national alliance represents an important milestone.

Above all, this collaboration will provide an opportunity to listen to retailers, observe how the technology is used in real-world settings, and continue refining the solution.

Our goal remains the same: to provide retailers and their employees with a simple, practical tool that supports the age verification process and helps prevent the sale of age-restricted products to minors.

We are proud of this new milestone and excited to continue developing Age Guardian in collaboration with the retailers who use it.
